Levada dos Cedros e Fanal - Percurso Circular

PT:

EN:
Levada dos Cedros originates in the water springs of Lombo do Cedro, at an elevation of 1000 meters, located on the slopes of the right bank of the Ribeira da Janela stream. Built in the 17th century, this levada is today one of the oldest watercourses built on the island, having been excavated in the soil of the slope and is lined with stone only in areas where the soil is more porous.
The route is 7.1km long, has a minimum altitude of 840m and a maximum of 1130m. For those who want to avoid the 1181 steps it is possible to go to the levada’s source and returning the same way (14km). You can also choose to do a circular route passing through the magnificent area of Fanal, leaving your cars at the beginning of Levada dos Cedros and climbing to  Fanal using some trails, some more noticeable than others.
In Fanal we find the marvelous groves of centuries-old Madeira laurel (Ocotea foetens), including some specimens that have resisted since times before the discovery of the island. Next to the Forest Post there are shelters with good conditions to make a small picnic.
Then we begin our descent down the numerous steps to the source of Levada dos Cedros. The source of the levada is the peak of beauty of this route. The waterfalls form a pond of pure and clear water in an area bathed by the sun in fine weather. A single place that certainly has much more to offer than what meets the eye. Relax, let yourself go or release your spirit of adventure and immerse yourself along the way to discover more hidden treasures.
We continue to follow the levada surrounded by the leafy and varied vegetation, although the cedar stands out in many zones. There is a viewpoint, from which you can admire the grandeur of the mountains that surround the area and, in the background, Ribeira da Janela.
